Enhancing Customer Service, Driving Sales through Infrared and Thermal Imaging Technologies

Contrary to what many of us learned from the 1987 movie “Predator” – which was among the first motion pictures to take infrared and thermal imaging technology to the big screen – the benefits of the military technology greatly surpass what we might remember. Even before its onscreen debut, infrared and thermal imaging had been utilized by a variety of industries. Today those industries include retail – which taps TI technology to enhance customer service and drive sales in stores across the globe.

How does infrared and thermal imaging benefit retail locations? The answer is simple – by transforming basic front-end operations into an opportunity to create returning customers. Here is how it works:

  1. Infrared and thermal imaging sensors are mounted over entrances, exits and checkout lanes to gauge body heat; and
  2. Data is collected from these sensors to count and monitor the number of people entering and exiting the store, arrival rates and the length of the checkout line.

With this data, retailers can track everything from average checkout line lengths to overall wait times, helping store managers properly staff and proactively manage the checkout line experience.

According to the NRF and KPMG survey, 74 percent of retail executives plan to increase customer insight and data gathering initiatives in response to significant changes in shopping behaviors – making infrared and thermal imaging a vital technology for retailers in the coming years.
