Graduate/Postgraduate Software Developers
InfraRed Integrated Systems Ltd (Irisys) is an SME which has developed a world-leading position in the manufacture and exploitation of low element count, low cost, two dimensional infrared arrays. This unique, non-intrusive enabling technology lends itself to a wide range of applications. The company is now taking a significant step into new markets with a need for expansion of our development team.
Irisys design develop and manufacture affordable People Detection and Tracking solutions for a wide range of commercial applications, based on its proprietary thermal imaging technology. We are currently seeking graduate and postgraduate-level software engineers to join our established team of young, bright and enthusiastic developers. The candidates will be expected to help enhance the team by developing a wide variety of software for detection products on the Windows platform and within embedded systems. Successful applicants will be working on diverse projects involving image processing algorithms, pattern recognition systems, tools development and customer facing applications. This is an ideal opportunity to develop your programming skills and your career, whilst working on unique and innovative systems – this isn’t dull database programming! The candidates must have:
- A proactive attitude.
- A desire to research and solve problems, to develop algorithms and solutions.
- Excellent C++ skills.
- A software engineering degree or the expectation of at least 2:1 that has included significant C++ programming experience. The degree should favour scientific disciplines (e.g. Artificial Intelligence/Pattern Recognition/Machine Vision/Neural Networks/etc).
- A-level maths, to at least a B grade.
- A love of tough coding challenges: we develop PC based world-leading algorithms and then squeeze them onto dedicated hardware.
In addition, the following skills would be considered an asset:
- Exposure to Visual Studio and MFC, and programming under Windows.
- Embedded C programming.
- MSc/PhD – we have positions for higher-degree level students that have carried out research in Machine Vision or Pattern Recognition.
- Experience in design for embedded products manufactured in volume.
- Java, C#, .NET, Windows CE, Visual DSP, Matlab, MSOffice.
Candidates whose principal skills are in Visual Basic, Java, Fortran, Databases/SQL or web-development are unlikely to be appropriate for these positions.

The candidates must have:

- Sound understanding and experience in developing with low level/ circuit level code. Commissioning and diagnostics at micro-processor peripheral level.
- Likely to have led, or contributed significantly to, platform architecture definition.
- You may have worked as a designer of high speed digital embedded electronics earlier in your career before majoring in embedded firmware for DSP systems.
- Rigorous nature and great attention to detail with a right-first-time approach.
- A relevant degree achieving at least 2:1.
- A-level maths, to at least a B grade.
- Formal computer science/software engineering skills perhaps through a 2nd degree or post-grad education - a professional developer keen to contribute to and instil software development excellence in colleagues.
- Assembly language experience and familiarity with compiler translations to assembly language and their optimisation.
- DSP experience ideally gained in volume products having resource constraints and complex algorithms.
- Experience of analysing and managing electrical noise in sensitive systems across the frequency range would be a benefit. For example, low frequency 0.01Hz or 0.1Hz, 1/f noise and effects of higher frequency noise in sampling systems.
In addition, the following skills would be considered an asset:
- Experience with Analog Devices' Blackfin processors would be a benefit.
- This role would suit a candidate with an interest in some, or all, of AI systems, machine vision, pattern recognition and neural networks.
- Exposure to Visual Studio and MFC, and programming under Windows.

We are currently seeking an experienced and skilled R&D technician to join our established team of young, bright and enthusiastic developers. The successful candidate will be rigorous and versatile and expected to help enhance the team by devising and carrying out experiments supporting the research developers and helping find solutions by developing a fundamental understanding of our systems and technology. Successful applicants may have an interest in machine vision systems and pattern recognition plus volume electronics and firmware products.
