How People Counting Works

Irisys’ market leading people counting units detect the heat emitted by people passing in the area beneath them as infrared radiation. Highly accurate, the units contain imaging optics, sensor, signal processing and interfacing electronics all within a discreet and compact moulded housing.

Up to eight virtual counting lines are defined by an operator using a portable PC set-up tool, and people are counted as they pass through each line in a defined direction. Mounting heights between 2.2 and 4.8m (7.2 – 15.7ft.) can be accommodated with the standard lens while other lens options are available to cover higher mounting heights.

As there are no calibration or scene-specific set-up requirements, and the units function as soon as they are mounted, systems can be installed very rapidly and at relatively low cost.

The units may be used as single counters for shop doorways either with relay or intelligent IP outputs, or can be linked to span a wide opening of up to 8 units. In the 'wide-opening' mode, counters are intelligently linked to prevent over-counting at the interface between adjacent units, the counting data is presented as if there is one counter unit with an extra wide 'footprint'. Output from the 'wide-opening' can either be relay or IP. The IP enabled people counters have internal data logs allowing data to be collected over IP, LAN or Ethernet connections. The 'DualView' IP device incorporates a video camera module for remote configuration, validation and audit.
